On June 20 2000,
Toronto, Canada
The Torch Of Life was lit for the first at Toronto City Hall. George
Marcello started a 12,000 mile across Canada carrying the Torch
to thank his annoymous donor family.

September 5 2001
Vatican City, Italy
Pope John Paul 2 received the Torch from George midway in his
769 Day walk. The Pope proclaimed on behalf of Vatican City that
Organ & Tissue Donations was a genuine act of love, and
encouraged George, to let the youth carry the Torch throughout
the world.

January 8 2004

over a hundred thousand students to the cause of organ & tissue donations.

November 5, 2005
Jenin, Palestine
Twelve-year-old Ahmed Ismail Khatib was shot in the town of Jenin
by Israeli troops who mistook his toy gun for a real one.
Instead of turning to anger, his father, Ismael, donated his organs
to five Israeli children and a woman aged 58.
He said : "Saving lives was more important than religion," and
added "I feel that my son has entered the heart of every Israeli."
Ahmed & his dad, and his family has had a profound effect on George Marcello, up to this day.

2007-2010
USA & Canada
Thousands of Students were recruited to carry the Torch Of Life worldwide to promote organ & tissue donations. The campaign
started  in Alaska and after hundreds of cities, reached Washington
DC. George was facing too many personal challenges. He had
to stop the mission regrettably.

April 13 2011 (Morning)
Toronto, Canada
Throughout the year, countless efforts were made to resume the campaign in Washington DC, but to no avail. It was disappointment
after disappointment. Couuld this journey be coming to an end.
This brought tears to George Marcello as he looked at the Torch &
started reflecting back to the first Step.
From 1995, after receiving a liver transplant, he created Step By Step
and 35 million steps later, and thousands of cities, with millions
carrying the Torch Of Life, there were so many memories to treasure.
His 15 year journey received International attention; he shattered the
myth that organ recipients are tied to machines and proved that transplantation is a cure; he raised awareness and saved lives.
He was affectionately called the Italian Terry Fox
For the past 7 years students championed the Torch & relayed it city
to city on a worldwide tour which unfortunately came to a halt in Washington DC.
This journey took its toll on George, physically, emotionally,
& financially. George prepares to end Step By Step.

April 17 -May 17 2011
Toronto, Ontario
George was checking his emails and noticed in one email, that a
young male Afghanistan student from McGill Univrsity was asking
George for advice to walk from Ottawa to Toronto. He wanted to walk
to show his gatitude to Canada. In another email a young female
Pakistan student from McMaster University was asking George for
help in saving her dad who needed a liver transplant. This felt like a good omen for George to ask Shaheem Joya (the McGill student)
if he would walk for the young girl's dad and for Step By Step.
Shaheem agreed & during his walk he contacted George every day. Shaheem woke something up in George. After completing the walk George shared with Shaheem the story about Ahmed Ismail Khatib
and how deeply it affected him. George was compelled to invite
the father, Ismael Khatib  to Canada to honour Ahmed with the
Torch of Life. George believes that this is the next step for
Step By Step and the Torch Of Life mission throughout the world.

June 2011
Palestine & Canada
Ismael, Ahmed Ismail Khatib's dad, is presently being contacted
by Step By Step. He will be invited to Canada for an exciting
7-10 day agenda throughout various cities. We want to honour
them & give them a real, warm Canadian welcome. We hope to
honour Ahmed by dedicating the Torch Of Life to him as the
Torch Of Life travels around  the world. His story can be told
everywhere. And as a result, we hope to encourage more
organ/tissue donations, love & peace throughout the world.
